Year 5 met with their peers from Kilrea Primary School for a very informative talk given by Firefighter Johnson about how to keep safe at home. The children listened attentively to the safety messages and have all agreed to join the ‘Safety Team’ by helping to share the information and advice given. Each child was given a Safety Team pack to take home ๐

โ ๏ธ๐ฆ๐ค Visit to Waterways Ireland - Engineers’ Week 2024 ๐ค๐ฆโ ๏ธ
Year 5 enjoyed a trip to Waterways Ireland site in Portna during Engineer’s Week 2024. The children were able to observe the engineers at work and learn about the different roles and responsibilities they have at the Kilrea site. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. Many thanks to Waterways Ireland for their warm welcome, informative tour and kind gifts they provided for the class.

๐ง๏ธ Experimenting with Science - Raincloud in a Jar ๐ง๏ธ
Year 5 have been learning all about ๐ง Water ๐ง in their World Around Us lessons. They used the ‘Raincloud in a jar’ science experiment to explore how the Water Cycle works in a hands-on and engaging way!
๐ถโ๏ธ๐ถโ๏ธ Shared Education - Walk of Kilrea ๐ถโ๏ธ๐ถโ๏ธ
Year 5 met with their friends from Kilrea Primary today for a guided walk of Kilrea. The children listened attentively to the historical tales and discovered lots about the different landmarks in the town. ๐๐คธโ๏ธ๐โ๏ธ Get Fit in February ๐โ๏ธ๐คธโ๏ธ๐
During the month of February Year 5 have been participating in the ‘Get Fit in February’ challenge, where they completed a different fitness challenge for 60 seconds, every day in February. The children loved this challenge and were eager to give all the exercises a go. This provided them with a ‘brain break’ between lessons and contributed to the number of active minutes they spent exercising each day. Here they are attempting some of the challenges…
๐ป๐ Safer Internet Day 2024 ๐๐ป
Year 5 watched an information video about staying safe online and the importance of telling a trusted adult if we come across anything online that we are unsure about. We then looked at 'How the Internet influences us', taking part in a walking debate and discussing how we felt about different online scenarios.
๐๐ซ๐ Catholic Schools Week ๐๐ซ๐
During Catholic Schools Week, Year 5 read the story 'My Name is Not Refugee' and discussed the hardships children are facing in today's world. They created welcoming posters to display in our school to make sure all children feel safe and welcome. Here is just a snippet of the work that went on...
๐๐ Library Visit ๐๐ Year 5 visited Kilrea Library, where they spent time browsing the shelves, found a quiet corner for a quick read and used the kiosk to borrow some books. Jean, the Librarian was on hand to help children with their library account. The children will return to the library for another few visits in the next few weeks.
โ๏ธ๐จ Snowman Art ๐จ โ๏ธ
Year 5 painted colourful rainbow backgrounds for their Snowman Art. They added paper shapes to the foreground to create their Snowman figure. The results were fabulous!!
โ๏ธโ๏ธ๐จ๏ธ Wonders of Winter ๐จ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธ
Year 5 painted beautiful Winter tree landscapes using watercolour and poster paint techniques. They created several layers of paint to add depth and dimension to their paintings. The finished artwork is displayed alongside the Year 6 and 7 pieces of work to create the beautiful ‘Wonders of Winter’ display. โ๏ธ
Paula from The Dog’s Trust visited Year 5 to deliver a lesson on ‘How to Behave Safely Around Dogs’. The workshop was very interactive and informative. The children were engaged throughout and we all learned something new about dogs and their behaviour.
๐ซ๐ค Shared Education ๐ค๐ซ
Year 5 visited Kilrea Primary School to begin their Shared Education Partnership. The children worked collaboratively to complete different tasks. They brought in items from home that represented themselves and discussed these items in their groups. Each group then took photos to create a PicCollage on the iPad. The children also designed their own Coat of Arms. Year 5 really enjoyed their visit and participated enthusiastically in the activities ๐ #SharedEducation #KilreaCommunity

Year 5 painted spooky skeletons onto black card. They added detail to their paintings using oil pastels. Have a look at their masterpieces ๐จ
๐๐บ๐ค Wildflower Garden ๐ค๐บ๐
Year 5 loved visiting the Wildflower Garden in the sunshine to explore in the outdoors. They spent the afternoon looking at the wildlife and even managed to catch a closer look at some bugs! ๐
๐โนโ๏ธ PE with Mr Higgins โนโ๏ธ๐
Year 5 are enjoying their PE sessions with our Derry Gaa Coach, Mr Higgins. We have been working on developing our gaelic skills using fun and interactive games. Keep up the great work Year 5!! ๐

To celebrate National Poetry Day, Year 5 created their own Autumn Haikus. First we completed an Autumn Mind-Map to warm-up our brains, before writing our Haiku poems. Plenty of powerful poets in the making…๐
