Our teacher is Mrs McAlary and our classroom assistants are Mrs Craven and Mrs Dowds. This page will keep you updated on all the class news and some of the activities we do throughout our time in Year 2.

Year 2 have been making the most of the spring sunshine. We brought the classroom outside to explore and learn in the outdoor garden. #outdoorlearning #outdoorclassroom #freshairisgoodforyou

๐Ÿ™ Feast of St. Columba ๐Ÿ™

We celebrated the feast of St. Columba on 9th June. St Columba is the Patron Saint of our school. We learned about the life of St Columba and sang our school song.

๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿ›๐ŸŒค School Trip @ The People’s Park ๐ŸŒค๐Ÿ›๐ŸšŒ

Year 1 and Year 2 set off for Ballymena on our school trip to The People’s Park. The rain stayed away and the children had a fun filled day, playing in the park with their friends. #makingmemorieswithfriends

Year 2 have been busy doing Easter themed crafts this Spring. Look at the colourful chicks they decorated using feathers and the Easter finger painted cards. We love arts and crafts in Year 2 ๐ŸŽจ

๐Ÿ”ดโšช๏ธ Derry Day in St Columba’s โšช๏ธ๐Ÿ”ด

Year 2 came to school dressed in Red and White to show their support for Derry footballers ahead of their Championship match against Tyrone. They had great fun cheering on the oak leaf men. #doireabú

โ˜˜โ˜˜โ˜˜ Green Day โ˜˜โ˜˜โ˜˜

We dressed in 40 shades of Green to celebrate St. Patrick. We listened to the story of St. Patrick's life and made shamrock cards for our family and friends.

๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŒ World Book Day 2022 ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“š

Year 2 came to school dressed in their pyjamas to celebrate World Book Day. They spent some quiet time reading their favourite bedtime stories ๐Ÿ˜ด before creating new Book covers for their favourite books. #worldbookday2022

๐Ÿฅž๐Ÿค— Pancake Tuesday ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿฅž

Year 2 enjoyed some toasted Pancakes to celebrate Pancake Tuesday. They added some tasty toppings to their pancakes; butter, jam, lemon juice or chocolate spread! They tasted great...yum...delicious!!๐Ÿค—

Year 2 put on their waterproofs and wellies and went outside to play in the snow. They had great fun building snowmen, making snow angels and exploring in the snow covered school grounds. The children were given time to appreciate and 'Take Notice' of the world around them โ„ #take5 #takenotice

Twosday is a special, one-time event that took place on February 22, 2022 – a Tuesday, hence the name! Year 2 celebrated the occasion by creating some Twos-Day! crowns. #two-day

๐Ÿงฉ๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿš€๐Ÿงธ Toys ๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿš‚๐Ÿงฉ

Our topic for January and February is ‘Toys’. We will be learning all about Toys; old toys, new toys, what toys are made from, where toys are made and how toys work. We will complete a range of activities linked to the theme in our Literacy, World Around Us, Play and other areas of the curriuclum. We even have a Toy Shop set up in the role-Play area in our classroom! Take a look at what else we got up to...

๐Ÿ‘ดโค๐Ÿ‘ตโค Grandparents Day โค๐Ÿ‘ตโค๐Ÿ‘ด

 

The children in Year 2 love their Grandparents. They painted beautiful portraits of their Grannies and Grandas to show how much they love them. #catholicschoolsweek #grandparentsday

โ›ช๏ธ๐Ÿ™ Catholic’s Schools Week 2022 ๐Ÿ™โ›ช๏ธ

The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2022 is ‘Catholic Schools: Living Life to the Full’. During Catholic Schools Week families, parishes and schools are invited to participate in a week of celebration of Catholic schools reflecting on their contribution to the common good of society. During Catholic Schools Week Year 2 explored their talents. It turns out they are a very talented bunch of girls and boys. #CSW2022 #livinglifetothefull 

During Catholic Schools Week, Year 2 also looked at different ways to make our school a better place. They recorded their ideas on the Interactive Whiteboard and we discussed them as a class.

๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŒŸ Christmas is Coming! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ…

 

Year 2 have been getting into the 'Festive Spirit' with some Christmas crafts. They have painted Frosty the Snowman, fingerprinted Christmas trees and made Snowmen Christmas Cards. The end results were beautiful ๐Ÿ‘

Year 2 performed their Christmas Show 'The Bossy King' on the school stage and what a wonderful performance it was. Superstars in the making!! ๐ŸŒŸ

Year 2 participated in the Santa Daily Mile wearing their Santa hats and Christmas accessories. Ho ho ho!!

Our topic for November and December was 'Castles & Fairytales'. We had great fun adopting the role of a fairytale character in the role-play area, building Castles using a range of construction materials and decorating crowns in the creative area. Take a look at what else we got up to...

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿงฆ Odd Socks Day 2021 ๐Ÿงฆ๐Ÿ‘

We wore ‘odd’ socks to school to mark the beginning of Anti-Bullying Week 2021. By wearing odd socks we are celebrating our differences and the fact that each one of us is unique. #oddsocksday #antibullyingschool

๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒˆ Ditch the Dark Day ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒŸ

Year 2 was bursting with colour when the children wore their brightest clothes to school on Ditch the Dark Day. Pupils were demonstrating the importance of ‘being seen’ when out walking near the road. The children were encouraged to actively travel to school in their brightest clothes. Many walked, cycled or travelled to school on their scooter. ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ›ด #ditchthedark #bebrightbeseen

Year 2 came to school dressed to impressed for Halloween dress up day. Their costumes were very scary indeed. They all looked the part and enjoyed a day of fun Halloween activities.

We made Halloween Chocolate Apples in Year 2. We had great fun dipping the apples in chocolate and sweet treats. Delicious!!

๐Ÿ“ฒ๐Ÿ’ป Code Week 2021 ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“ฒ

 

During Code Week, Year 2 developed their coding skills using the ‘Coding Safari’ App on the iPads. The game challenged pupils and prompted them to use their coding skills to help problem solve. They had great fun! #codeweek2021

๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ๐Ÿฟ Autumn has arrived! ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚

Part of the ‘Take 5 steps to wellbeing’ initiative, Year 2 went outdoors to ‘Take Notice’ of the changing seasons. We used our senses to explore and examine the World Around Us in Autumn. We were able to look around and appreciate the beauty in our world. This has helped to contribute to our overall well-being. #5stepstowellbeing

Year 2 were experimenting with 3-D shapes in their Maths lesson this week. They were investigating which shapes were best to use when building a tower. The pupils were comparing their towers to see who could build the tallest. Lost at the concentration on their faces and the fab structures they created โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒ European Languages Day 2021 ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ

 

We celebrated European Languages Day on Friday 24th September. Mrs Kielt visited our class to teach us some Spanish words and phrases. We learned how to say the numbers from 1 to 10 using the Mambo Song. We had lots of fun!! Gracias Mrs Kielt ๐Ÿ˜Š

We made the most of the mild September weather and took our Play Based Learning sessions outdoors. Have a peek at the fun activities we have been getting up to as we explore the Outdoor Garden.

๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒน Wildflower Garden ๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒป

 

We visited our Wildflower Garden to see the beautiful flowers that have grown this Summer. The field has come alive with a rainbow of colour; red, orange, yellow, pink and purple. What a wonderful sight!

We are glad to be back at school for a new School Year. Mrs McAlary and the children are looking forward to learning lots of new and interesting things in Year 2.
