Nursery Unit

Welcome to our Nursery Class page. You will find lots of beautiful photos of all the activities that we have completed in Nursery. 

Article 28 states that all children have the right to an education. 

🧍🏻September🧍‍♀️

Here are the staff of our Nursery. Mrs McCormick is the Nursery teacher. Mrs McCloskey is our classroom assistant. Mrs Lavery, Mrs McGlinchey and Mrs Marlena support the children in their learning.

Article 3 states that all decisions and actions must be made in the best interests of the child. 

We are engaging in lots of settling in play activities with our new friends.

Outdoor play helps to develop our gross motor skills. 

🧍‍♀️We are getting to know each other. We are learning our friends names.🧍🏼‍♂️

We have iPads in Nursery. They have lots of Mathematical, Language, and World Around Us activities to help us.

🙏 In Nursery we will learn to bless ourselves and say our prayers.🙏

✏️📈Creative activities help to develop our fine motor and language skills. ✂️🖍️

🦺👗Each month we have role play areas. We can dress up in whatever costumes we want to. Role play develops our confidence, friendships and language. 👑⛑️

🧎🏼‍♂️Mrs Lavery will take yoga classes every Thursday. Yoga helps us to relax and enjoy quiet time together. It is part of our Mindfulness curriculum. We will also meet Fifi the Fairy.🧎🏼

Article 31 states that every child has the right to relax and play. 

🍁October🍁

🍏We made apple pie. We used lots of mathematical concepts to help us. It tasted beautiful too. 🍎

🟡🔵 We completed a wide variety of activities to learn our colours.🟣🔴

✂️We practiced with our scissors too. Friday is “scissor day” in Nursery.✂️

🧍‍♀️We know lots of information about ourselves. We talked about our name, our age and our families. 🧍🏼‍♂️

Article 2 states that every child has the right to live without discrimination.

🦺 We wore bright reflective clothes to Nursery for Ditch the Dark Day.🦺

🎈We needed a new fridge for our snack and milk. Thank you to Donaghy Bros for bringing it to our Nursery. 🎈

🎇 Happy Halloween 🎃 

We are carving our pumpkins. We put the seeds in the water tray. We uses all our senses to talk about the pumpkin.

Article 15 states that every child has the right to have friends.

👻We completed lots of beautiful Halloween creative activities. Look at our skeletons.☠️

🦔November🦔

🍁We learned all about the season of Autumn and trees. We talked about tall trees and we built tall towers. We gathered leaves and we loved completing so many creative activities worth them.🍁

🦔Santa sent Harry the Hedgehog for us to look after. This activity taught us about empathy for others. It also taught us about animals that hibernate over the Winter.🦔

🦔Look at all the photos of Harry when he came to visit each of us. We looked after him so well. We fed him, played with him, washed him and he slept well after listening to a nice story.🦔

Article 24 states that every child has the right to a clean and safe environment.

🧦Odd Sock Day marks the beginning of Anti-Bullying Week. We learn about why each of us is unique, and how we can be kind to each other.🧦

🍲 It was a cold November week. We decided to make hot potato and leek soup 🥣 

It was delicious. We all tasted some. There was a beautiful smell in our Nursery too. Thank you Mrs McCloskey. 🥔🥬

🦺 We use our Road Safety Calendar every day. Scooter teaches us about keeping safe in our environment. 🦺

🔴🟣🔵 Pattern Making helps our “thinking brain” develop.🔵🟣🔴

🎈As part of Anti-Bullying Week we celebrated World Kindness Day. On this day we learn about celebrating and encouraging acts of kindness such as helping our parents, helping each other in Nursery, using kind words and getting our Kindness Card.🎈

🎄December🎄

❄️ In December the weather was cold. We explored the outdoor area. We made foot prints and scattered blue glitter on them. ❄️

🕸️🕷️ We took photos of the sparkly spider webs outside the Nursery too.🕸️🕷️

☃️❄️ We drew snowflakes and snowmen on the whiteboard.☃️❄️

Article 13 states that every child must be free to express their thoughts and opinions ….

🎄There were lots of brilliant Christmas activities this month. We were so busy.🎄

🙏 We went over to visit the crib and the Christmas tree in the school. It was beautiful. We talked about Baby Jesus. We read the Christmas Story. We decorated our own tree. 🎄

🧤January🧣

As part of our early mathematical activities we matched pairs of gloves and mittens. We had to find the match of each, describe the glove or mitten and try them on by ourselves. 

It is cold in January. We tried on a variety of Winter woolies. We lots of hats, scarves, mittens, gloves and snoods to chooses from. 

From January our parents came to “Stay and Play”. It was on from Tuesday until Thursday each week. Our parents arrived at 9am and played until 10am. 

Article 9 states that children must not be separated from their parents unless it is in their best interests ….

❄️We completed lots of Winter jigsaws, games, creative pieces and stories.❄️

🧊We made our own ice cube and ice blocks. We froze some of our penguins and polar bears in the ice. Then we watched them defrost. We learned lots of new language.

☕️ Some days were very cold. We made hot chocolate 🍫 as a treat and had it with a biscuit for our snack.☕️

🩷 February 🩷

In February we met lots of people who help us in Nursery.

We met Mrs Martin our Principal, Mrs Mellon our secretary and Bridie our caretaker. 

 

👨🏻‍🚒We took out our fire station and all our fire engines and equipment.👨🏻‍🚒

We made Saint Brigid’s Day Crosses in our classroom. 

We had a wonderful Grandparents Day. Lots and lots of grandparents came to play and read with us. Thank you.

🩷 We love to bake in Nursery. We baked shortbread hearts.🩷

Article 31 states that every child has the right to relax, play and take part in…. artistic activities.

As part of learning about online safety we talked about our “digital footprint”. We decorated footprints and made a display.

🍊🍎 Each Friday was “Fruity Friday” in Nursery. We tasted lots of familiar fruits and different fruits.🍐🍇

Tony the Lollipop man and Catherine and Aine, who are nurses came to visit us. They told us all about their jobs. 

👩🏻‍💼 Edel the doctor, who is Aideen’s mummy told us all about her job. 
She showed us lots of equipment that a doctor uses.🩺

 

📚 Read with Dad and Grandad Day was a great success.

Our February Displays.

🌺 March 🌸

Growth in Spring was a wonderful topic to learn all about how we grow, animals grow and plants grow. 

We planted lots of bulbs outside in the Nursery garden. We had a busy morning.

🌸 We remember our wonderful mothers on International Women’s Day🌸

☘️ To celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day we wore green and we attended assembly. Miss Marlena baked a special Polish cake for us all to taste.🎂 Thank you Marlena.☘️

🌱 As part of our Mindfulness we had a peaceful morning planting seeds. We will look after them and watch them grow.🌱

🥪 April. 🍵

🥬 Thank you to Anna, Stefan’s mum, who sent in a lovely variety of herbs for us to taste and smell. 

✏️ We have been using our whiteboards to practice our prewriting skills. We have completed number formation, written our names and followed pencil control activities. ✏️

Article 29 states that education must develop every child’s talents and abilities….

🥚 Stefan’s mummy gave us fresh eggs from her hens. Mrs McCloskey made delicious scrambled eggs. We ate it with some toast for our snack.🥚 

As part of our topic of food Mrs Lavery very kindly brought in some different breads, cheese and pepperoni for us to taste at snack time. Everyone tasted a piece of each food. Thank you Mrs Lavery. 

Article 24 states that every child has the right to the best possible health… clean water, nutritious food…

🍕Mrs McCloskey made tasty pizzas with us. We choose our toppings from hame, cheese and pineapple. We ate them for our snack. 🍕

🍓 We added different food colouring to natural yogurt. Everyone ate some. It was delicious.🍓

🎂 Miss McKiernan invited us to visit Year 7 and to see the fabulous baking. Every child had made something beautiful using fairtrade ingredients. Well done Year 7.🎂

🐞🦋 Minibeasts in May 🐛🐌

🐻 Thank you to all the children who donated towards the Daisy Dander. The children had a wonderful time with their teddy bears in the park. 🐻

Article 29 states that education must develop every child’s … abilities to the full.

🐝Our topic of Minibeasts was so exciting. We looked for them in our Nursery garden. We completed lots of games, jigsaws, paintings and creative activities around different minibeasts. We dressed up as minibeasts for our Nursery assembly. We sang lots of rhymes and songs.🪱

🐳 June 🦀

Article 28 states that every child has the right to an education.

We hope that St. Columba’s Nursery has provided this for your child. 

 

🐝 We had a fabulous nursery trip to Honeybees play centre in Ballymena. There were lots of role play areas for us to explore. We had a great time. We loved the bus trip and we were delighted to eat our lunch together. Thank you Honeybees. 🐝 

🌞 We took advantage of the beautiful sunny weather and we played outside every day. 🌞

🧍‍♀️ We are so lucky to have Faye in our class. She is a fabulous Irish dancer. She danced for us and showed us her medals and trophies. Well done Faye. 🧍‍♀️

🔴⚪️ We wore red and white to Nursery to support our County🔴⚪️

Happy Father’s Day to all our wonderful daddy’s and grandads.

🏃🏼‍♂️ Sports Day in Nursery. 🏃🏼

🥇 We had an exciting Sports Day at Pearse Park. The children took part with such enthusiasm. They were delighted to see their parents and toddlers join in too. 🏓

🌞We had lots of exercise and exploration in our beautiful garden. We used the equipment to practice our balancing and teamwork. 

🌱 We grew our own green beans. We tasted them too. We watered them and looked after them in the sun. We had lots of time for fabulous construction play in the small playground. Look at all the models we built.📱

🐻 We had our Teddy Bear’s Picnic on a warm, sunny day in our Nursery play area. We had tasty sandwiches, fruit, a drink and a biscuit. We took our favourite teddy’s in. We listened to a lovely teddy bear story when we finished eating. 🐻

We met our new Buddies for Year 1. Mrs Maguire introduced each of the children to their new buddy. This buddy will be responsible for looking after their new Year 1 friend in September. They will be in the playground ensuring that everything is ok.
