STEM

What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM activities are practical and encourage children to think independently and find solutions to problems. We want our children to develop the necessary skills to go out in to the world and develop their chosen career.

🌍STEAM Project🚙

Year 7 enjoyed learning more about the Greenhouse Effect during their STEAM lesson. They explored the harmful effects of greenhouse gases on our planet.

ALMAC Science Workshop

As part of their Shared Education Programme, Year 7 joined Kilrea Primary school to enjoy a morning of scientific discovery. The children were joined by scientists Frances and Caroline from ALMAC and had the opportunity to observe and participate in a range of fun scientific experiments.

Engineers’ Week 2024

Waterways Ireland hosted a series of visits to their workshop in Portna to celebrate Engineers’ Week 2024. Year 5 visited the Kilrea site to observe the engineers and gain insight in to the type of work they are involved in daily.

🚢 Titanic ✂️
Year 6 have been learning all about the Titanic. They made their own boats and tested which material was best to help them to float.

Off We Spin!

Year 4 were exploring things that move and made paper spinners. They tested them out and decided what made the best spinner.

🚀🚛 Off We Go! 🚂✈️

Year 4 used junk material to make a variety of vehicles. Some very good thinking and problem solving skills on display while building their modes of transport.

Almac Project

Almac Group has partnered with STEAM Education Limited to give our Year 7 children access to ‘Science in a Box’, a fun and engaging curriculum linked Science Programme. It is Almac’s overall mission to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technologists by helping children learn vital Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths skills, sparking their natural curiosity about the world around them.

🌍World Space Week🚀

In celebration of ‘World Space Week’, Year 3 participated in an exciting online workshop facilitated by The Nerve Centre. The children enjoyed listening to astronaut Nicole Scott answer questions on life as an astronaut before designing postcards as crew mates onboard ‘Spaceship Earth’.

✈️⛵️We are Inventors🚂🚙

After learning all about the first transport inventions, Year 4 designed and made their own. They really let their imaginations go wild and came up with some great ideas!

🏆STEM Learning Awards 2022🥇

We were delighted to attend Stormont Buildings for the Northern Ireland STEM Learning Awards to accept ‘The Enthuse Partnership of the Year Award for Collaboration’ with St Columba’s Straw, St John’s Swatragh and Millquarter PS.

🚀Blast Off!

Year 5 have been exploring the topic of ‘Space’ in World Around Us. They had great fun sending a rocket off in to the air!

🌍Energy Innovation Challenge♻️

We are delighted to announce that Sophia from Year 6 was chosen as the overall winner of the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Energy Innovation Challenge. The mayor, Richard Holmes, paid a visit to the school to present Sophia with her fabulous prize: a 3D Printer for the school. Rachel, Devin, Jack, Lucia, Niamh and Lucy from Year 6 and Holly from Year 7 were also awarded certificates for superb ideas.

❄️Polar Animal Rescue!❄️

Year 4 were challenged to free the polar animals from the ice. They used warm water to try to melt the ice and release the animals. It was cold, but great fun!❄️

❄️How do polar animals keep warm?❄️

Year 4 used butter to recreate the effect blubber has on some polar animals. They put their hand in to icy water first. Then they put it inside the ‘blubber’ glove and back in to the icy water. They discovered that the water didn’t feel as cold!

Energy Innovation Challenge

Year 6 took part in the Causeway Coast and Glens energy innovation challenge. They were tasked with developing ideas that would change our world for the better. Have a look at some of their great inventions.

✈️Let’s Investigate!

Year 4 carried out a fair test to find out which plane would fly the furthest. All of the planes were the same size, made of the same material and the children stood at the same line to let them fly. They had a lot of fun carrying out this investigation!

Blast Off!

Year 6 enjoyed building their bubble powered rockets.
