Our teacher is Miss McKenna. On this page you will find lots of pictures of what we are learning and doing in school.

Growing Peas

Back in April, Year 5 planted peas in the outdoor garden. We enjoyed watching them grow over the last 2 months. We were finally able to harvest the peas and taste test them. They were delicious!

Red and White Day

 

Today we donned our best red and white gear to support Derry on their way to the final. Doire abú!

Year 5 School Trip to the People's Park

 

We had a great day playing with our friends at the People's Park.

The Daily Mile's 10th Birthday

 

Year 5 had great fun participating in lots of activities to mark 10 years of the Daily Mile. This initiative allows us to get outside each day for some exercise.

Easter Crafts 🐰 🐣

After learning about the Stations of the Cross, we created an art piece using the skill of layering to showcase the Cross on the hill of Calvary. We ripped different pieces of paper and layered them to create the background.

Lauching Rockets 🚀 

To end our World Around Us topic, we did a science experiment which involved mixing vinegar and baking soda to launch a rocket. We loved waiting to see when it would take off

Space 🚀 🌍 

This term we are learning about Space. We had lots of fun making paper mache planets!

Child Mental Health Week

 

Grandparents Day 

As we could not invite our grandparents into school this year, we recorded a video to send home to show just how special our Grandparents are to us.

Catholic Schools Week 2022

To celebrate Catholic Schools we were 'growing together' by planting seeds of God's love.

 

Article 14 states that every child has the right to a religion.

Christmas Card Crafts 🎅🏻 

Year 5 chose their wool and matched it to coloured card. We then threaded the wool around the card to make a Christmas tree design. We love that each one is unique!

Christmas Jumper Day 🎅 🧑‍🎄 

We had so much fun today wearing our Christmas jumpers to school. We even got to catch a glimpse of Santa and Mrs Claus as they flew by on a helicopter! 🚁 

 

Daily Mile Santa Run 🎅 🏃‍♀️ 

We donned our festive head wear and participated in the Daily Mile Santa Run. We had so much fun!

 

Handling Data in Numeracy

This week in Numeracy, we were learning how to draw and interpret time graphs. We had lots of fun comparing and discussing the data.

The Northern Lights

This week we were studying the northern lights and drew a landscape picture of them using chalk.

 

Article 31 - children have the right to practise The Arts.

⭐️Ditch the Dark Day⭐️

Year 5 donned their brightest clothing and actively travelled to school by walking, cycling and scooting. We discussed why it is so important to wear bright clothes when outside, especially as it is much darker in the morning as and evenings.

Anti-Bullying Week👫

Year 5 participated in a drama ‘freeze frame’ activity to demonstrate the different types of bullying.

Odd Socks Day for Anti-Bullying Week 🧦 

Everyone came to school with odd socks to mark the beginning of ‘Anti-Bullying Week’. #onekindword

COP26 🌍 

Year 5 participated in a walking debate to discuss climate change and what we can do to help.

 

Article 29 - children must learn to respect the environment.

Halloween 👻 🎃 

Year 5 really enjoyed dressing up for Halloween. We also drew some ghosts using the skills of layering and blending.

Code week 2021💻

Year 5 really enjoyed coding each Minecraft quest.

Walk of Kilrea🚶🏼‍♀️🚶🏻‍♂️

 

As part of our World Around Us topic, ‘All About Me’, the children explored Kilrea using a map and looking at the historical buildings.

 

Articles 17 and 28 - all children have the right to learn about where they live.

📚National Poetry Day 2021📃

 

Year 5 celebrated National Poetry Day this year by writing a poem using the theme 'This Is Me'.

 

Article 13 - all children have the right to share their thoughts and opinions  

European Languages Day

 

To celebrate European Languages Day, Year 5 learned a song in Irish called ‘Báidín

 

Articles 7 and 8 - children have the right to a nationality and identity.

Two children in Year 5 became teachers for the afternoon and taught us all some Polish phrases. Dziękuję Ci.

Outdoor learning🌳🐞

 

Year 5 love spending time in the outdoor learning area. We look for bugs, have a go on the natural obstacle course and play in the mud kitchen and construction area.
