Most young people care deeply about environmental issues and wish to make a positive change in the environment around them. The Eco-Schools Programme provides an ideal way for fostering environmental awareness in the entire school in a way that links to many curriculum subjects. The primary aim regarding the Eco-Schools scheme is to combine learning and action for the improvement of the environmental performance of Eco-Schools.
We began our Eco-Schools journey in 2009 and we have been awarded four Green Flags (The highest award). We have made many improvements in our school since 2009 in terms of Energy, Waste, Water, Litter, Transport, Healthy Living, School Grounds, Biodiversity, Global Perspective and Climate Change. The Eco-Members continue to ensure everyone takes an active role in reducing the environmental impact of our school.
Walk to School Week
Well done to everyone who participated in our annual
Walk to School Week! We were very lucky to have
such good weather. We hope to see as many as
possible continuing this healthy activity in the
third term when the weather is good.
We all had a great day with Fitness Freddy.
He told us the importance of keeping active
and drinking water. We had lots of fun
exercising to music.
Stay Active Assembly
Year 3 performed a terrific assembly on the importance
of being active and staying healthy. We all picked up
some great tips on exercise.
Cash for Clobber
Thank you for contributing to our latest collection!
♻️All Things Litter🗑
Year 4/5 performed an Assembly telling us all about the importance of keeping our community tidy and recycling as much of our rubbish as we can. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
💦Year 3/4 Water Assembly🌍
Mrs McAlary's class performed a great Assembly following the visit of the Water Bus. They told us about the importance of water and the detrimental effects of a lack of water in third world countries.
💦St. Columba's Welcomes The Water Bus!🌎
A big thank you to NI Water for their kind donation of a water butt. We very quickly put it to good use in our woodland area. Another great way of saving water!💦
🌍Eco After School Club🌳
The Eco-Club did a great job collecting rubbish and
pulling weeds in our school grounds.👏
Today we cleaned out the polytunnel and it is ready for Spring planting!🌱🌻
Fairtrade Fortnight is a very important time at St.Columba's
as each class learns about the importance of being aware
of Fairtrade products and why we should buy them if we can.
🌎Fourth Green Flag Achieved👏
At the beginning of February we received a letter to
say our fourth Green Flag had been awarded! We are
very proud that our hard work has once again
been recognised. Well done everyone! 👫
🍊🍉Cancer Focus Visit🚴🏻♀️⛹🏻
Emily from Cancer Focus spoke with each class and encouraged us to try to eat a more healthy diet and to take regular exercise.
Well done to everyone who contributed to the annual
Shoebox Appeal. All of these presents will be delivered
to people in other countries who will have very little
this Christmas. Thank you!
Congratulations to Katie in Year 7 who was the overall winner of our school Eco-Code for this school year. Congratulations also to the other finalists; Naomi, Sara and Lucia.
