Our page will keep you updated on our class news and photographs of activities in our day-to-day life in Year 4/5! Our teacher is Mrs Keenan and our classroom assistant is Mrs McMichael.

We enjoyed a picnic in the sunshine on our last day of this school year.

It has been a very busy year and everyone is ready for a well earned break!

We had a great time on our end of year trip to the cinema to watch Aladdin and afterwards at the Fun Factory in Ballymena.

👩‍👦Year 5 Meet Their Buddies👨‍👦

Our Year 5 pupils recently met their buddies ahead of welcoming them to Year 1 in September.  

🍎🍍🥕 Action Cancer 🍎🍍🥕

We attended an Action Cancer workshop which highlighted the importance of keeping our bodies healthy.  We sorted a variety of items using the Eat Well Plate and then had a go at ordering a selection of food and beverages according to the number of sugar cubes they contained.  We were shocked by some of the results!

🙏🏻 First Holy Communion 🙏🏻

 

Congratulations to our Year 4 children who made their First Holy Communion on Saturday 25th May.

Every child carried out their special role in the ceremony with breat reverence and the choir sounded amazing as always! Thank you to the teachers and all the staff who helped prepare the boys and girls for their special day.

👨🏻‍🚒Fireman Visit👨🏻‍🚒

We were joined by our friends from Kilrea Primary School for a visit from Seamus Darragh from Kilrea Fire and Rescue Service. He spoke about the importance of fire safety and shared lots of tips on keeping our houses safe. 

NSPCC VISIT

The ladies from the NSPCC visited our school to carry out a workshop which encouraged us to 'SPEAK UP AND STAY SAFE'.

📚 World Book Day in Year 4/5! 📚

🏡 Where I Live 🏡

 

As part of our World Around Us topic, 'Where I Live', we went on a walk around Kilrea.  We discussed many historic features of our town as well as the buildings/facilities we are familiar with. Before returning back to school, we enjoyed a special treat! 

🎮📱 Online Safety Workshop 📱🎮

Key Stage 2 attended a very informative workshop with our friends in Kilrea Primary School at the Sports Complex.  This workshop was delivered by online safety expert, Wayne Denner.  Wayne spoke to us about many of the dangers we face online, particularly while playing specific apps/online games that many of us have access to at home. It is our hope that we have adhered to his advice!

📱💻🎮 Safer Internet Day 🎮💻📱

 

Year 4/5 marked Safer Internet Day by carrying out a range of discussions and activities based on the importance of staying safe online.  In our class we watched the story of Zap and Zoom before designing posters for display on the ways to stay S.M.A.R.T. while online.

🌟👏🏻 Congratulations to our pupils who were awarded 'Pupil of the Month' for January! 🌟👏🏻

🚶🏻‍♂️🛴🚦 Sustrans 🚦🚲🚶🏼‍♀️

This week, each pupil received a high visibility vest to wear on their journey to and from school; helping us to BE BRIGHT and BE SEEN. Johnny from Sustrans visited our class later in the week to discuss the best ways to stay safe as cyclists and pedestrians. He encouraged us to consider walking/cycling as part of our daily travel.

🥞🍞 Fraction Fun 🍞🥞

 While investigating fractions, the children worked in pairs to show halves and quarters. We found that there were many different ways to represent these fractions. 

 

🎶 Music and Dance Workshop 🎶

Year 4 and 5 children from St. Columba's P.S. and Kilrea P.S. came together to take part in the next of our series of workshops on music and dance which will take place this year. During our session we performed to extracts from 'Be Our Guest' and 'Don't Be Anything Less Than Everything You Can Be'.

The Supporting Act

Year 4/5 recently explored diary writing in our Literacy. We watched the advert entitled 'The Supporting Act' released by BBC. Afterwards, the children were given the opportunity to record a diary entry from the perspective of either the father or the daughter. Here is one example of our work!

The Year 4 and 5 pupils retold the Christmas Story through drama, song, dance and verse!

🌹 Beauty and the Beast 🌹

Our Key Stage 2 pupils enjoyed a trip to the Waterfront in Belfast to see Beauty and the Beast.

🎬🍿 Year 4 Cinema Trip 🍿🎬

 

Year 4 enjoyed a trip to the Cinema in Maghera to watch 'Nativity Rocks'. We enjoyed some treats while watching the film. A great time was had by all.

🧀🐮🥛 The Dairy Council 🥛🐮🧀

 

We enjoyed a visit from The Dairy Council this week to discuss the importance of having a healthy balanced lifestyle and the advantages of including dairy products in our diet.

🎄🎁 Road of Hope Shoe Box Appeal 🎄🎁

 

A huge 'thank you' to everyone who contributed to our annual Road of Hope Shoe Box Appeal.  In total, we sent off 194 boxes and a cheque for £1450. There will certainly be smiles on the faces of many children, young adults and the elderly in developing communities in Eastern Europe on Christmas morning thanks to the generosity of the St. Columba’s Community. 

Anti-Bullying Week 

 

We carried out a range of activities to mark Anti-Bullying Week. This year's theme was 'Choose Respect'. Our tasks included designing posters on the iPad and working in groups to agree on solutions to resolve bullying scenarios. We ended the week with 'Odd Socks Day'.

🧙🏻‍♀️🎃Spooktacular Spookathon🎃🧙🏻‍♂️ 

 

We had great fun participating in our PTA 'Spookathon' Fundraiser on Friday 26th October.  Everyone came to school dressed in their Hallowe’en costume and completed our 'Mile a Day' in fancy dress.  Thank you to everyone who sponsored us.  Together, we raised over £4000.

📏🔢 Maths Week Ireland 🔢📏

As part of our whole school celebration of Maths Week Ireland 2018, our class was set the challenge to build the tallest 3D structure we could using only spaghetti and jelly babies as pur building materials.  After much discussion and problem solving, we finally got our structure to hold (though we had to be quick with the camera)!

📱EU Code Week📱

We explored the apps Lego Fix the Factory and Swift Playground during EU Code Week in Year 4/5.  As well as being great fun, coding is a fantastic problem solving activity. We worked in pairs to carry out these activities. 🤔💡

🔦 Ditch the Dark Day 🔦

We held our first 'Ditch the Dark' day on Friday 12th October.  Johnny from Sustrans was in school that morning to greet us in our bright colours.  He was very impressed at the numbers of children who are now walking or part-walking on their journeys to and from school!

🍂🍁📚 National Poetry Day 📚🍁🍂

 

In celebration of National Poetry Day, Year 4/5 carried out a shared writing task by creating a haiku poem on the theme of Autumn.  We learned that haiku poems have three lines and always have a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.  After our shared writing task we then had a go at writing our own Autumn haiku.  These are now on display in our classroom.

☀️ Cancer Focus Workshops 🍭

Lucy and Eimear from Cancer Focus visited to carry out workshops on the importance of having a healthy diet and lifestyle.  Year 4 became food detectives and looked at examples of foods which were high in fats and sugars. Year 5 discussed the dangers of sun damaged skin and were reminded of the best ways to keep our skin protected.

🌍 The World's Largest Lesson 🌍

We looked at Goal Two - Zero Hunger during the 'World's Largest Lesson'.  Together, we discussed the goal to end hunger and achieve food security, improved nutrition and promotion of sustainable agriculture worldwide. We recorded the main points following our discussion.

🏃🏼‍♀️ The Daily Mile 🏃🏻‍♂️

This year, we have joined 'The Daily Mile, initiative.  The aim of The Daily Mile is to improve the physical, social, emotional, mental health and wellbeing of our pupils.

We are thoroughly enjoying it! 

 

🌍📝 International Literacy Day 2018 📝🌍

Today, Saturday 8th September, is International Literacy Day! To mark it, we held discussions on the inequalities adults and children experience in literacy development around the world.  We then designed some beautiful posters which depict our love of literacy. These are now on display in our classroom. 📚📖📝✏️
